Android TV once again pops up with new report suggesting it will be available next year

A new report suggests that an Android set-top box is on the way to our living rooms. Via The Verge, we learn that Google is getting ready to launch a streaming device to run right into Roku and Apple TV, offering services like Netflix and Hulu. It also confuses the space outside of mobile for Google, and convolutes a comment made earlier by Sundar Pichai.

plair-tv-04

The new device was originally said to offer a Kinect-esque movement sensor, but today’s news doesn’t mention that. It is noted to have a touchpad remote sold alongside the device, which is a strange departure. If this proves to be accurate, Google will have a Chromecast, Google TV, and this Nexus TV device all set for the living room.

When the Chromecast was launched, Google TV was called into question. Would the set-top box live on? Android and Chrome chief Sundar Pichai said both had a place in the living room, though few could see how — or why. Google TV has never found widespread adoption, and the Chroemcast offers everything we need at a bargain basement price. With the Nexus TV (our designation, not official), we wonder what the real plans could be, and where the breaking point is for Google’s living room efforts.

It seems the real angle here could be Android gaming. The report mentions that the device would offer a selection of games, but doesn’t note if the full library offered via the Play Store would be available. If so, the Nexus TV seems to step on more toes, as devices like Shield or Ouya try to find a home with Android gaming fans.

We should also note that this is another in a long line of reports surrounding Google’s Android set-top box efforts. Andy Rubin was said to have shown off a device of this kind behind closed doors at CES, but that was nearly a year ago. We have, to date, seen no official mention of this effort by Google. While we like the idea of an Android set-top device, it has the potential to confuse consumers beyond the one-two punch of Chromecast and Google TV.

Pebble smartwatch now available with Amazon

The retail availability of the Pebble smartwatch has been expanding over time. And as of today, it looks like the smartwatch has arrived with yet another retailer. The latest is Amazon and they have the watch available in two colors and as a Prime eligible item.

pebble-black-540

Those two colors are black and red and the price of the smartwatch is close to what we have been seeing with other retailers (as well as direct with Pebble). Amazon has the black Pebble selling for $149.99 and the red model is slightly less expensive, at $147.49. In addition to the availability, Amazon in included a gift card for those who make a purchase.

Those who pick up either color Pebble from Amazon will get a $20 Amazon.com Gift Card. Basically, while the price of the watch is the same as with other retailers, it looks like Amazon is banking on some going for the Gift Card. Not to mention, the Prime eligibility for the shipping.

Of course, if black or red is not the color you prefer, there are other options available. The Get Pebble website has the watch in the same Jet Black and Cherry Red. They also have Orange and Arctic White in-stock and ready to ship with Grey currently sitting in a backordered state.

While there are more and more smartwatches coming available, the Pebble seems to be a favorite for many. We suspect that is partially due to the lower price. The Samsung Galaxy Gear is $299.99 and the Qualcomm Toq is $349.99. But otherwise, the Pebble also has quite a bit of developer support, which means goodies coming not only from the Pebble team, but also from third-party developers and enthusiasts.

Motorola has impressive Black Friday offers available via website

Prospective Moto X owners have a pretty decent Black Friday deal waiting for them at the Motorola website. Available until Sunday, select accessories are 30% off, and the Moto X itself starts at just $99. That’s a whole lot of customization without having to break the bank.

androidcommunity_motomaker_25-540x426

The MotoMaker site recently opened up for other carriers, and can now be used with a device for any of the four major carriers in the US. If you use Republic Wireless or U.S. Cellular, you can still order the device in black or white. The handset is also getting the Android 4.4 update now, so you won’t get left behind.

As for the accessories, the 30% discount should get you just about anything you want. The exclusions are on some of the more profound and expensive pieces, and one Google offering. The Chromecast is unavailable for order with the discount, as well as the Deck by SOL Republic. The Tracks Air headphones are also excluded (and unavailable as of yet), but the wired Tracks headphones are not.

That leaves the rest of the store for you to peruse and buy from, with a full 30% off. From battery packs to the Moto Skip, it’s all there — and all discounted. You can even get a cool case and Moto X dock, then free shipping if you spend over $75. If you’re into Moto, this is as good as it gets.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 available in two new colors for Argentina

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is now available in additional colors, with red and rose gold being added to the mix. That brings the total number of colors to 5, with white, black, and pink already on offer. Both new colors will be available worldwide early in the new year, according to rumors, though some carriers may reserve exclusivity for a while.

Note 3 Red

The Note 3 is currently the only device that can be reliably paired to the Galaxy Gear. Though some carriers have begun adding functionality to the Galaxy S4, AT&T has notably halted the rollout, leaving the Note 3 as the only smartphone for Samsung’s smartwatch. With that, we still like the Note 3 without the Gear, even though the Gear adds a depth t the user experience.

For fans of larger phones, the Samsung Note line is the benchmark. Though TouchWiz is a bit heavy, it does add a lot of functionality for larger devices and styli use. Multi window looks much better on a Note device, and the overall improvements Samsung made to the Note 3 over the Note 2 make it a very attractive offering. The art deco sides with Samsung’s smart cover are aesthetically impressive, too.

The new colors are currently available in Argentina, which is an attractive emerging market for OEMs. We saw the Moto G launch in South America, too, which signifies how important those new avenues are to device manufacturers. While we don’t know just when the new colors will reach the rest of the world, it would be nice to pair the device to a Galaxy Gear in color, too.

Moto G available via Amazon, Koodo

Moto G available via Amazon, Koodo

The Moto G has many smartphone customers excited. For those stepping up from a feature phone, the Moto G brings an attractive price point without the need for a contract. It also packs a good enough battery to last the day, and specs that won’t disappoint for those who are just looking for something else.

moto_g_hands-on_ac_341-540x376

The Moto G is currently on sale for $150 outright via Koodo Mobile. A subsidiary of TELUS, Koodo is meant as coverage for the cost conscious consumer. The device on offer is the 8GB black variety, and also comes with a $50 bonus to be mailed 6-8 weeks after the phone is purchased. If you’re interested, it’s probably a good idea to jump on the offer; we can’t say how long it will last.

Amazon is also listing the Moto G, with a ship dat of December 4. The price is $199 for the 16GB model, and $179 for the 8GB variety. Unfortunately, this device is only available for service via AT&T domestically, as it’s the global GSM variant that doesn’t work with T-Mobile’s HSPA+ signal.

The Amazon prices are the same as you’ll get via the Motorola website, also. If you’re a T-Mobile customer, you can also order the US GSM version via Motorola, which gives you the phone you need at the price you want. The only difference is that Amazon ships a bit quicker, with Motorola sending the device out on December 9th.

And it probably is the one on the side of Sony, first response element found, as far as this is the only one of the two players capable of an interest be found. Facebook Home now available for download

Facebook Home

OK, boys and girls. Now's the time to see what all the fuss is about over this Facebook Home thing. As promised, it's now available in the United States, for free, from the Google Play Store. (It's actually still propagating in Google Play as we write this. If you don't see it immediately, hang tight. It's coming.)

If you've somehow missed all the hullabaloo over the past week, Facebook Home is part custom launcher, part messaging client -- and all Facebook. You install it and get your friends Facebook posts front and center, in a nicely designed sort of lock screen called "cover feed." Then there's the "chat heads" messaging system -- it went live this morning in the Facebook Messenger app which pops up your friends profile pictures in little persistent bubbles. The traditional Facebook application is still there, of course.

Officially, Facebook Home only is available for the Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy Note 2, and the HTC One, One X and One X+. But we'll see what else we get it up and running on.

For more, see our Facebook Home and HTC First FAQ.

HTC First with Facebook Home now available on AT&T

HTC First

A little over a week after its announcement at Facebook HQ, the HTC First is available to buy from AT&T. The Facebook Home-equipped handset puts the social network front and center, with Facebook's new launcher bringing your news feed (and neat little features like chat heads) directly onto your home screen.

The HTC First will set you back $99.99 on a standard two-year contract, or $449.99 if you're buying it outright. All four color options -- black, white, red and pale blue -- are available over on AT&T's site.

Incidentally, we're not yet seeing Facebook Home on the Google Play Store, but that's also due to launch today alongside the Facephone. We'll continue watching throughout the day and keep you posted.

Ravensword: Shadowlands now available in Google Play; this is what a mobile RPG should look like

Ravensword: Shadowlands

Ravensword: Shadowlands, Crescent Moon Games third in the Ravensword series, is now available in Google Play. I'll tell you up front -- it's not cheap. The game checks in at $6.99, but after just a few minutes playing it I know a lot of folks will think it's worth every penny.

Ravensword: Shadowlands is an evolution of the RPG / adventure game genre, bringing character skills, plenty of items to hunt for, and a decent storyline. The kicker is that it also has some of the most impressive visuals we've ever seen. Running through the world, both above ground and in dungeons, comes to life because of incredible 3D details. It's a very "Elder Scrolls" look and feel. Mounted combat, multiple weapon choices, enchantments and quests make the gameplay exciting, and it's all very playable. In addition, if you're using a Tegra 3 device like the Nexus 7, you'll also have some superb bloom effects, real-time shadows, and life-like ragdoll physics.

There is no way we can give this a full review in just one day, but we wanted to let everyone know it's now available. We'll revisit after we've had a chance to hack and slash our way through a little more. For now, hit the break to see the gameplay trailer, and the Google Play link above will direct you to the download.

Garnet red and 'La Fleur' Galaxy S3 Mini now available from Carphone Warehouse

La Fleur GS3 MiniLa Fleur GS3 Mini

UK retailer the Carphone Warehouse has announced that it's begun stocking the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini in limited edition "garnet red" and "La Fleur" color options. We've seen both options before on the full-sized S3 -- the red was a prominent color offered by AT&T in the U.S., while the floral design has been spotted in renders, but hasn't seen as widespread a release.

With the UK Galaxy S4 launch just a month away, now might seem like an odd time to hop aboard the Galaxy S3 train -- but if you're looking for something in a smaller form factor, you could certainly do worse than the S3 Mini. Carphone is offering the S3 Mini on contracts starting from £12.50 per month for the first six months, then £25 thereafter. The SIM-free price stands at £269.99

iRig Recorder for Android now available on Google Play

Android Central

IK Multimedia iRig audio recording app first announced would be coming to Android back in CES at the beginning of January. At that time, we were told to expect it to land by the end of January. All were taken in January, came the memory and the app never appeared for download. Better late than never though iRig Recorder is now available as a free download from Google Play store. When the application is a free, complete functions can be opened for a one time fee of $ 4.99.

In addition, there is a full-featured recording and editing app, iRig recorder is compatible with existing iRig devices, previously only supports the iOS devices. (G) is notoriously slow to adopt Android, but the iRig suite of audio equipment arrival and recording app is fantastic news for anyone who needs to make high quality recordings on the go.
