Google has just pushed out an update to the Google Play Store app that can turn out to be a mixed blessing to users. While it does offer a few new conveniences, it also now integrates a bit more with Google’s social networking ecosystem.

The new Google Play Store will feature an indicator telling users if an app, whether free or paid, has in-app purchases or IAP. The indicator doesn’t offer anything more than that, unfortunately. It should, however, give users a heads up that the free app they’re downloading will have some strings attached.

The other new major feature for the Play Store app is an activity feed. Those familiar with digital distribution systems like Steam will be familiar with how one can opt to show others latest purchases, played games, and other forms of activity. That will similarly be the case here to some extent. Users will be able to view and share with others a stream of their activities, though it is not clear whether those will be limited to +1 or reviews only. There is also an amount of integration with Google+, allowing users to view a user’s Google+ profile directly from the Play Store app. It is also unknown if one’s Google Play Store activity will automatically be mirrored on one’s Google+ feed as well, or if there will be certain filters and switches that can be applied.

Google is really playing up the social aspects of Play Store even in its review and rating features. Google has improved the interface to make this communal part of the app ecosystem more prominent and is trying to make it easier for users to leave reviews or star ratings. At the same time, Play Store will be pushing apps and content highly recommended by your contacts in search lists, just in case you happen to enjoy the same things they do.

Google Play Store 4.5.10 is already rolling out to some users, but, as always, it will take some time to reach everyone in all markets.

Angry Birds Star Wars II update adds 40 new levels

Rovio recently updated Angry Birds Seasons and added quite a few new levels. And well, it looks like they have just done the same for the Star Wars version. Setting an app is as simple as checking the box to the right of the app name. That said, you should be able to grab this update from the Samsung Apps store on your device immediately.

Bottom line here, this is the way the notifications should have been when the Galaxy Gear originally launched. Needless to say, this is certainly still a case of better late than never. Otherwise, another of the big complaints also seems to be getting worked out over time — device support. Initially this was limited to the Galaxy Note 3, however Samsung has been rolling Android 4.3 out to other devices. Now if we could just get Samsung to do something about the price.

Google has just rolled out a double release of the mobile version of its Chrome web browser. While the latest stable version of Chrome for Android contains a variety of stability and bug fixes, the improved Autofill form feature takes this release’ spotlight.

First and foremost, Chrome for Android, which is now updated to version 31.0.1650.59, is kept up to date with the latest Android version by adding printing support from the browser on Android 4.4 devices. While originally only available on the Nexus 5, Android 4.4 has started to roll out to the more recent Nexus devices. Google has even put up new factory images on its support page.

But the highlight for this release is the improvements to the Autofill system for forms. The Chrome web browser on the desktop is able to store information such as names and addresses that you use in forms, which is then synced to other Chrome browsers. It can even store credit card information, of course, at your discretion and risk. This feature is now snaking its way, slowly and surely, to Chrome for Android as well. This will make things like checking out items from online stores faster and easier, as you have less information to type in using virtual keyboards. At the moment, very few retailers use this on their mobile websites, but Google is working on quickly resolving that.

The latest stable Chrome for Android is now up on Google Play Store. Chrome Beta for Android users may already be enjoying these features, but Google also has a treat for them. There’s nothing major in the new 31.0.1650.60 version of the app, though, but the source code changelog is available for browsing for those interested.

Now the company is rolling out an update to its Android and iOS apps that makes it easier for users to manage their Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Protect smoke alarm whether at home or far away.

The biggest and probably the most long-awaited improvement to the Nest Android app is support for different screen orientations. It is always annoying to use an app on a tablet that is stuck in portrait mode. It is even more jarring when an app supports both landscape and portrait modes, but not consistently. Such was the case with the Nest app, which previously forced users to switch to a landscape orientation to get to some settings, even on a phone. Thus the apps has been completely redesigned to be useful in whatever orientation, situation, or device you may be using.

A lot of the other improvements in this new version is related to the Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm These include automatically calling emergency services should an incident occur or providing first aid and emergency instructions in case of an event. The app now provides the results of previous Nest Protect tests, both those done manually and self-tests made by the system, to ensure that the user is up to date on the monitor’s hardware status.

The Nest app is available for free on Google Play Store, but, of course, you need to own one of the home monitors to have any use for the app. Updates will roll out automatically like any other Android app update and user action is not needed.

A quick heads up for you owners of the AT&T LG Optimus G -- there's a software update rolling out today. As reported in our Optimus G Fourms, you'll still be on Android 4.0.4 (build IMM76L), and you'll now have software version E97011c. Other than that, we can't quite tell you what's changed.
