Le Nexus 5 nouveau roi des Smartphones Android ?

Après des mois de rumeurs interminables, Google a officialisé le Nexus 5 le jeudi 31 octobre dernier.

Pas d’événement en grandes pompes comme savent si bien le faire Apple et Samsung, mais une mise en ligne discrète sur le Google Play, sans aucune annonce de la part du géant de Mountain View.

La nouvelle a néanmoins fait le tour du web en quelques minutes, aidée par toute la presse spécialisée. Il n’en aura pas fallu plus pour que le Nexus 5 connaisse un véritable engouement de la part du public.

En moins de trois jours, la version 16Go était en rupture de stock sur le Google Play U.S. Quatre jours plus tard, il subissait le même sort sur le Google Play France, avant d’être en rupture totale quelques jours plus tard.

Réapprovisionné, le Nexus 5 est depuis ce matin à nouveau en rupture de stock aux Etats-Unis.

Mais pourquoi un tel succès pour un téléphone qui n’a même pas été présenté par son créateur ?

Sans conteste, c’est le rapport qualité prix du Nexus 5 qui fait son succès. Pour moins de 350,00 € (349,00 € pour la version 16Go), le terminal est un Smartphone haut de gamme, qui accomplira avec brillo les tâches du quotidien.

Le Nexus 5 embarque un processeur quad core Snapdragon 800 à 2,3Ghz (le même que le Galaxy Note 3), 2Go de RAM, un écran Full HD de 4,95 pouces et une batterie de 2300mAh.

A titre de comparaison, le Galaxy Note 3, possédant des caractéristiques légèrement meilleures certes, ne s’affiche pas à moins de 650,00 €

300,00 € qui font toutes la différence sur le rapport qualité prix car, avouons le, la différence de performance n’est pas gigantesque entre ces deux terminaux, ce qui n’est pas le cas du prix.

Cerise sur le gâteau, le Nexus 5 est le premier Smartphone au monde à être équipé d’Android 4.4 Kit Kat.

Google et ses terminaux Nexus commenceraient ils à inquiéter Samsung, le constructeur qui règne actuellement en maître sur le monde Android ?

LG entend bien doubler ses ventes de smartphones avant fin 2013

Doubler ses ventes mondiales de smartphones en seulement 12 mois n’est pas une mince affaire, mais c’est exactement qu’a prévu LG pour l’année 2013 à l’aide d’une forte line-up associant produits haut de gamme et téléphones bon marché. Un objectif que le coréen pourrait néanmoins atteindre comme semblent le croire les investisseurs et autres observateurs du marché qui estiment que l’entreprise pourrait écouler pas moins de 50 millions de smartphones soit quasiment le double des 26,3 millions vendus en 2012. Des prévisions qui vont au-delà des propres estimations de LG, de l’ordre de 40 millions.

Un optimisme loin d’être arbitraire dans la mesure où la société est parvenue à écouler pas moins de 10,3 millions de smartphones au cours du premier trimestre 2013, ce qui représente le quart des estimations initiales de ventes de LG. Le premier trimestre de l’année est considéré comme le hors-saison. On savait déjà que les smartphones Samsung Galaxy se vendaient comme des petits pains, mais ce qu’on ne savait pas encore c’est si Samsung était parvenu à maintenir sa part de marché mondiale de 30% au cours du premier trimestre 2013. Un mystère finalement résolu puisque la réponse est Oui comme nous l’apprennent les derniers chiffres de ventes de smartphones pour les trois premiers mois de l’année.

Toutefois, en dépit du fait que la part de marché de Samsung au trimestre passé soit équivalente à celle du précédent, Samsung a vendu plus que fin 2012, le marché mondial des smartphones ayant enregistré de début janvier à fin mars une augmentation de l’ordre de 9,4% soit 216,4 millions de smartphones vendus au premier trimestre 2013.

Autrement dit vu que la part de marché du coréen est restée stable, cela signifie dont que les ventes de smartphones Samsung ont également augmenté de 9% atteignant ainsi un total de 65 millions d’unités. En d’autres termes trois smartphones sur dix vendus étaient des smartphones Samsung.

Smartphones low-cost: 46% du marché d’ici 2018 ?

Smartphones low-cost ou smartphones haut de gamme ? En tant qu’androinautes passionnés, on ressent toujours le désir, assouvi ou pas, de posséder les derniers smartphones phares du marchés. Il suffit de voir l’engouement généré par des appareils récents comme le HTC One ou le Galaxy S4, même pas encore sorti. Toutefois, de nombreux acheteurs se penchent néanmoins vers les smartphones low-cost qui représentent actuellement 28% du marché, soit un peu plus du quart. Une tendance qui devrait augmenter durant les années à venir selon ABI Research pour qui la part de marché des appareils d’entrée de gamme devrait s’étendre à 46% d’ici 2018.

Actuellement de l’ordre de 259 millions d’unités, les ventes de smartphones low-cost devraient tripler pour atteindre un total de 788 millions d’ici 5 ans. Pour ABI Research, le prix d’un smartphone bon marché se situe en dessous de 250$, partant du principe qu’un appareil milieu de gamme est proposé autour des 400$ et un appareil haut de gamme à un prix encore plus élevé.

Un constat qui signifie alors deux choses. D’une part, les gens en ont assez de payer cher pour disposer d’un appareil récent avec des spécifications récentes et d’autre part, les téléphones étant de plus en plus puissants, innovation oblige, il est désormais possible de s’offrir un smartphone, techniquement correct et susceptible de répondre à l’ensemble de nos besoins pour pas trop cher. Par conséquent, pourquoi s’en priver ?

Some 400 police officers in New York have been equipped with Android smartphones and a new crime-fighting Android app under a pilot scheme, the New York Times reports.

The app is designed to give officers the ability to run person and address searches, bringing in information from several different sources. Officers can look up police records on individuals, including photos, and access vehicle registration records. The app is also fully location-aware -- NYPD officer Tom Donaldson told the NYT “If I see that in the last month, there have been six arrests on the seventh floor for drug trafficking, maybe I want to hang out on the seventh floor for a while.”

Police would previously have had to rely on cumbersome laptop-based systems in their patrol cars to retrieve this info, or radio details back to a dispatcher. The app, officers tell the NYT, offers a much easier way to access this data. Donaldson explains, “Our dispatcher will tell us if they have a warrant or not but it’s a simple yes or no answer. I don’t know if the guy is wanted for murder or for not paying a parking summons. We rarely know. Now we know.”
